Description:

This revolver was manufactured circa 1858 and is a mid-production example of a Model 1849 Pocket with a small round trigger guard. The top barrel flat is marked "-{ADDRESS COL: COLT/LONDON.}-". "COLTS/PATENT" is marked on the left side of the frame, and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene. Because this is a Hartford produced revolver that was sold in the U.S., it does not have any English proofs. The matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, cylinder and back strap with the partial number "5178" on the loading lever. It has a casehardened hammer, loading lever, and frame with smooth crescent loading cutout on the right. The cylinder and barrel, which cutout for loading, are blued and the trigger guard and back strap are silver plated. It has a brass cone front and hammer notch rear sights. A few single letter or number marks are seen throughout. The revolver comes in a 20th century wooden case with a inset plaque on the lid and red cotton lining with Colt instructions adhered to the inside of the lid. The case contains a Syke's Patent flask, Colt's patent bullet mold for ball or mini-ball, a section with lead balls, and a partially full Eley Bros. cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The revolver retains traces of the faded original blue finish, hints of the dark case colors on the frame and additional colors visible on the loading lever, and 85% plus of the silver plating. It has been cleaned and has a very clear cylinder scene and markings. The exposed brass has an aged patina with verdigris visible on the butt. The remaining components have a mixture of gray and brown patinas with some small nicks and scratches and a few slight areas of pitting. The accessories are poor, and the reproduction case is in very good shape with some small chips, light wear, and wrinkles and light stains in the lining.
