Description:

This early Ainsworth inspected Colt Single Action Cavalry Revolver was manufactured in late 1873 or early 1874. The serial number "2149" is in the serial number range (1982, 2019, 2223, and 2401) of revolvers documented in the book: "COLT CAVALRY AND ARTILLERY REVOLVERS by John Kopec and Sterling Fenn as having been specifically issued to the 8th, 5th and 6th Cavalry Regiments. This early scarce revolver still remains in its predominately original condition with only the front sight having been altered. It has the early 7 1/2 inch barrel marked with the early "script" address: "+ COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.+" with slanted crosses at either end of the address and the underside of the barrel stamped with the matching serial number "2149" along with a small "A", "P" inspector and firing proofmark along with the correct Colt "C" and "G" sub-inspection marks on either side of the ejector rod boss hole. The revolver still retains the early style ejector housing with barrel boss and ejector rod with 'bullseye" head. The cylinder has the early small bolt stops, is correctly serial numbered "2149" and is stamped with the correct "A" and "P" proof marks on the side. The left side of the frame has the two-line/two-date patent markings followed by the "U.S." property mark, with a "C" sub-inspection mark stamped in the frame hammer well above the firing pin hole. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1155". The small "A" inspection mark of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Orville Ainsworth is visible on the trigger guard below the serial number and on the top of the back strap. The frame, trigger guard and back strap are stamped with the serial number "2149". It is fitted with the original one-piece walnut grip with a hint of the outline of the inspectors cartouche on the left side.

Rating Definition:

Very good with traces of the original blue finish remaining mostly on the underside of the barrel, under the ejector rod housing. The balance of the metal surfaces, including the frame, have turned a gray patina overall. The markings and clear and distinct. The grips are in good condition showing wear and weathering on the sides and the lower edges. They fit tight around the back strap and rear of the frame. The only alteration as noted is the front sight where the original blade was removed and a rifle type front sight was dovetailed into the barrel. A very nice looking, mostly original early production Indian War Colt Model 1873 U.S. Cavalry Single Action revolver.
