Description:

Developed in 1871, the Murcott design is recognized as one of the earliest (if not the first) functional hammerless side lock shotguns, using an under-lever for both locking/releasing the barrels and cocking the internal hammers. Though surpassed by later designs where the barrels served as the cocking devices, the Murcott was an important step in the evolution of the British sport shotgun. Single nickel bead sight on the smooth rib, with "THEOPs MURCOTT'S PATENT. 68. HAYMARKET. LONDON" marked on top, light engraving at the breech and London proofmarks on the underside, which are repeated on the water table along with more Murcott markings. The flocks are scroll border engraved with a pair of hammer indicator discs and the frame shows extensive scroll engraving with floral accents. On the upper tang is a safety lever, with a gold inlaid "LOCK'D" safe position to the left and an unlabeled fire position on the right and the break lever on the underside is engraved to match the frame. With a checkered straight wrist stock, with engraved fittings on the splinter forearm, tear drop accents on the stock flats, an unmarked inscription panel on the underside, and a checkered naked butt with engraved heel and toe plates. Measurements: chokes - open, chambers - 2 5/8 inches, shell removal - extractor, length of pull is 13 1/2 inches.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel shows smooth wear of the Damascus pattern, with areas of gray patina and scattered dings and pitting. The frame and locks have silvered out, with a few hints of the original pattern, and visible color remains on the interior of the forearm. The cocking indicators have lost their markings, but still rotate properly, and the gold safety position inlay remains strong and solid. The stock is good, with some dents and scuffs. Mechanically very good.
