Description:

All of the items in the lot are made out to one Gerhard Seidlitz, a Luftwaffe officer active with Bomber Wing 55 circa 1941-1943 as a Lieutenant and Oberleutnant, and Fighter Wing 300 circa 1944 as a Hauptmann. Bomber Wing (Kampfgeschwader) 55, Flying Heinkel He1115 medium bombers, participated in the invasions of Poland and France, as well as the Battle of Britain, flying over 4700 sorties over the British Isles before moving to the Eastern Front, where after initial successes in Operation Barbarossa they were converted into ad-hoc supply transports in support of Stalingrad, before being disbanded in 1944. Fighter Wing (Jagdgeschwader) 300 was formed in 1943 as part of an experimental "Wilde Sau" (Wild Hog) night defense operation; with Nazi radar being effectively neutralized by the then-cutting edge British "Window" chaff-release system, Wilde Sau used conventional single-seat day fighters in conjunction with ground-based spotlights, flying at high altitudes and using the illuminated cloud formations to "backlight" British aircraft and engage them with plain eyesight. Later JG 300 would become a "Sturmgruppe", using heavily armed and armored Focke-Wulf Fw190's to break up American daylight formations, engaging bombers at point-blank range and even ramming them. While effective, these missions resulted in heavy German losses, both for hard to replace equipment and harder to replace veteran pilots. 1) Silver Honor Goblet, 8 inches tall and 3 7/8 inches wide across the mouth, with the main body showing a World War II pattern Iron Cross First Class on one side, and a scene of 2 eagles in mid-air combat on the reverse. The base of the goblet is marked "FUR BESONDERE LEISTUNG IM LUFTKRIEG" (For Particular Service in the Air War) around the base and "LEUTNANT GERHARD SEIDLITZ AM 6.11.41" around the center beneath a wreath of oak leaves. The underside bears the markings "JOH.WAGNER&SOHN" over "(crescent moon)(crown)835(eagle)". Also included with the goblet is the original "Ehrenpokal" presentation certificate, made out to Lieutenant Seidlitz and signed by Hermann Goering. 2) Four presentation certificates for the Luftwaffe Bomber Clasp (Frontflug-Spange fuer Kampfflieger), bronze in 4 July 1941, silver in 14 August, gold in 28 October 1943, and gold with "300" hanger on 7 December 1944 (marked "Zweitschrift" (duplicate) on top), with the first three issued with KG55 and the last with JG300. Each comes in A) the original certificate, B) a set of reduced 3 1/4 x 4 3/4 inch negatives, and C) a set of framed photocopies of all four.

Rating Definition:

1) Excellent with some minor edge wear and a few light handling marks. The certificate is very good with some light creases. 2) Very good with the originals and negatives showing light handling marks.
