Description:

Early Tranter's patent revolver first introduced in 1868. The top barrel flat is marked "S. GRANT 67A ST. JAMES ST. LONDON", and "TRANTER'S/ PATENT" is marked on the left side of the frame above "37685" and the left side of the ejector rod. The upper left barrel flat is marked "380", and "30" is marked on the rear cylinder face. It has blade front and frame notch rears sights, an unfluted six-shot cylinder, and a checkered walnut grip. There is scroll engraving on the frame, barrel near the breech, trigger guard, and grip cap along with border engraving at the muzzle and front of the frame. Stephen Grant was born in Ireland in 1821 and was appointed as the gunmaker for the Prince of Wales in 1871. He along with his sons were noted as some of the finest gunmakers in London and often adopted the patents of others. It is possible that this is a gun of their manufacture or one simply retailed by them.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 25% of the original blue finish on the barrel and frame with a gray-brown patina on the balance. 75% or more of the thinned blue finish remains on the cylinder which may be a replacement. The grips are very good with some small dings and minor scratches and otherwise crisp checkering. Mechanically fine with legible markings and clear engraving patterns.
