Description:

This is a beautiful example of a scarce pre-war Dutch contract Luger that was manufactured by DWM, that was subsequently arsenal refurbished. This arsenal refurbishment does not distract at all from the value of these pistols as they are rarely encountered, and saw considerably hard service in the Far East, Dutch Indies prior to the invasion by the Japanese. Any Dutch contract luger is considered very rare and one in this very high end condition is extremely rare. This beautiful pistol is actually a very late production example that falls into a very high serial number range that would have been within the Vickers contract serial number range. These early pistols are very distinctive in that they have the Geladen marked extractor with the "RUST" marked safety lever area, which is the Dutch word for safe. The top of the chamber is unmarked, and the top of the toggle retains the original DWM markings. The right side of the barrel extension has the early (1928 era) Dutch, circled "HLK" proofmark noted in Costanzo's book on page 300, which listed the proof as an early "Dutch Colonies" mark. The right side of the barrel extension, breech block and underside of the barrel has early "Crown/N" commercial proof. The top of the barrel is dated "1939" indicating the year the pistol was arsenal refurbished. These early contract pistols were some of the best produced by DWM and all have the early desirable 1906 features such as the grip safety, blank chamber, nicely blued finish and straw colored parts. The right side of the pistol has a small, blank, silver plate attached to the frame instead of the typical brass plate found on Vickers Ltd. Lugers. Clearly this may indicate that this pistol was intended as some kind of presentation piece, which also may give some credence to the very high serial number range as noted above. The pistol is complete with an original, and very rare Dutch contract leather Luger holster. These holsters are also very rare even more so than the pistols themselves in that leather deteriorated in the heat and salt air of the Far East. The front flap is marked with a "circled z/ CW/N/12/39". These holsters are also unique in that they don't have any provisions for a spare magazine but instead have a small pouch on the side for a brass cleaning rod/oiler. This rod is very similar to the standard Navy Luger and artillery rods only shorter in length. It is completely correct and original and is marked "LV 217". This excellent rig is accompanied by a very rare original Dutch Contract leather double magazine pouch that contains, two original Dutch contract luger magazines. These magazine are easy to identify in that they have the nickel plated magazine body, with wooden base, that is pinned higher up on the magazine body, but also have a small steel catch on the back side of the base. The front of the pouch is fitted with two smaller pouches; one for the magazine loading tool, which is also original and included and a small steel pin punch, which is also included. Also accompanied with this beautiful rare rig is an equally rare WWII Dutch Command knife/dagger and sheath. These command knifes were issued on a very limited basis and this one is in excellent condition. The blade, lower handle ring and wooden handle are all correctly proofed with a small "Crown Z" proof/acceptance mark and the underside of the cross-guard is stamped with an issue number of "8146/A". The leather sheath is also all original and stamped on the back side "2204E".

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% plus of the original/correct arsenal blue finish overall, with wear on the edges and high spots. The small parts retain 80% of their original straw colors overall. The walnut grips are also in near excellent condition, with nice sharp distinct checkering on both sides showing only minor handling marks. The holster, magazine pouch are all in excellent, original condition, with nice tight original stitching, excellent light to medium brown color overall with clear sharp markings and proof, even the spare magazines are in excellent condition. The Commando knife is also in excellent condition as noted with 70% original blue on the blade with an excellent wooden handle and leather scabbard with clear sharp markings overall. Just a beautiful extremely high condition complete Dutch contract Luger rig with all accessories.
