Description:

Late production,1916, .22 caliber M1903 Gallery Practice Rifle. Springfield Armory records indicate that 272 M1903 G.P. rifles were manufactured in calendar year 1916. These rifles, along with the 100 G.P. rifles manufactured in 1918 represent the last of the of the 15,525 G.P. rifles produced by Springfield Armory. The majority of the G.P. rifles were destroyed by the Army following WWI, only a few G.P. rifles survived, and high condition examples with good bores are quite scarce. The rifle has the standard casehardened receiver and blued barrel, barrel bands, trigger guard, floor plate and bolt. The post-1909 pattern stock has a single reinforcing bolt and is fitted with a finely checkered buttplate. The 'high hump' hand guard is the pre-1919 pattern. The stock forend is stamped ".22". The left wrist is stamped with the correct inspector initials "D.A.L." enclosed in a rectangle. The stock, correctly, is not stamped with the encircled "P" firing proof found on .30 rifles. The barrel is marked: "SA/Ordnance Shell and Flame/12-16" in three lines behind the front sight. The rear sight is a standard .30-06 pattern with 2850 yard center notch on the leaf (early G.P. rifles used .30-03 rear sights; this was discontinued about 1910) and large, dished windage knob. The safety and magazine cut-off selector have a casehardened finish and are marked with Roman (no-serif) letters. The bolt has the correct "I 8" steel lot code on the safety lug. The rifle includes five .22 caliber cartridge holders on a brass stripper clip.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as partially refinished (trigger guard). The balance of rifle retains 85% of the original blue and casehardened finish on the barrel, bolt and receiver. The oil finished, black walnut, stock and hand guard are excellent with some small scattered dents and scratches. The refinished trigger guard appears to be a replacement and has very faint NRA sales marking on the finial. The balance of the rifle appears to completely original. The cartridge holders are in very good condition.
