Description:

The Model 1903 was the first semi-automatic rifle offered by Winchester and was followed by the Model 1905 and 1907 of similar design but larger calibers. Manufactured in 1918, this example has the two-line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight on the left and two-line trade mark, model and caliber designation at the breech, Winchester oval proofs on top of the receiver and barrel at the breech, and serial number on the bottom of the frame and on the trigger guard. The top of the frame has the scarcely seen "US/flaming bomb" marks. At least one other 1903 with the Ordnance marking has been seen at our auction house, but little information is known regarding their use. This rifle may have been used to train units that were to be issued the Model 1907 which saw limited U.S. military use but was very popular with law enforcement. It features a dovetailed blade front sight with silver bead, fixed notch rear sight, and is mounted with a smooth forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally restored. The rifle retains 98% of the blue finish with a couple of small spots of light pitting, a few slight scratches, and light handling/storage marks. The re-oiled wood is also very fine with several small pressure marks. Mechanically excellent with clear markings.
