According to the included information provided by the Cody Firearms Records Office, the record for this rifle is dittoed from the prior serial number. There is some debate as to how much information these "dittoes" carry over. A scan of the factory record is included. This rifle was received and shipped by the Winchester warehouse c. September 1898 and has a round barrel, half magazine, and a shotgun style rubber buttplate. It was manufactured "extra light" (weighs under 7 1/2 pounds) and is fitted with an oil finished checkered pistol grip stock and forearm, a Lyman hunting front sight and a sporting style frame mounted peep sight, and a filler block in the rear sight dovetail. The rifle has very fine floral engraving on the forend cap, the barrel near the breech, nearly all of the frame, on the bottom of the lever, and even on the end of the magazine tube, on the rear sight filler block, and on the peep sight. The stock has a contrasting grip cap and two sling swivels (front one is partially loose)with leather sling. Interestingly, this example has a blued frame which predates Winchester's switch from casehardened frames to blued ones. The latter change for standard production rifles took place in 1901. Also, an oval, post turn of the century Winchester proof mark is present on top of frame, denoting return to the factory for refurbishing possibly the engraving.

Very fine as factory refurbished. 80% of the original blue finish remains with nearly all of the finish retained on the barrel and the finish partially thinned on the frame. Rich case colors are visible on the sides of the hammer and the lever has a golden brown patina. There are some spots of light oxidation. The factory oil finished wood is also very fine with sharp checkering, some hairline grain separation cracks in the center of the butt and light handling/storage type marks overall. The buttplate has a chocolate coloration and is otherwise fine. Mechanically excellent with crisp engraving and clear markings.
