Description:

These flintlock pistols have silver inlaid designs and golden "knight on horseback/IAK" medallions on the barrels which are marked "IOH ANDRE KUCHENREITER". The lock plate is marked "I.A./KUCHENREITER." The side plates, trigger guards, ramrod pipes and buttcaps are brass. The full length incised stocks have horn forend caps. The markings, including tangs marked "1" and "2" respectively, indicates that these pistols were manufactured by Johann Andreas Kuchenreiter as a pair. Kuchenreiter was part of a line of Bavarian gunsmiths that produced fine arms including many for members of the Germanic courts. These examples were produce in the latter part of the 18th century and several similar pistols with various variations have been seen with Kuchenreiter's signature silver inlays. His weapons are often seen with advanced features; for example, this set has rifled bores, folding leaf rear sights, and removable shields on the upper wrists that allow the included shoulder stock to be fitted to either gun. Due to the quality of his work, many Kuchenreiter arms that have been found have been converted to percussion making original flintlock examples, let alone complete sets, particularly scarce. Each pistol includes a ramrod with a horn tip. They come in a hardwood case with forest green felt lined fitted interior which holds the detachable shoulder stock which has a wooden patch box on the right side, bullet mold, powder flask, cleaning rod and tips, patches, and five lead balls.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The silver inlays and lock remain bright with only a few slight flakes, and the barrel retains 60% of the niter blue finish with a brown patina on the balance. There are some scrapes from use on the frizzen. The brass remains partially bright with otherwise an attractive aged patina. The wood is fine as repaired with detailed carved designs, and some minor nicks and slight scrapes. The forend cap has a chip on the right side. Mechanically excellent with clear markings.

The brass remains partially bright with otherwise an attractive aged patina. There are some scrapes from use on the frizzen. The wood is very good with detailed carved designs, some minor nicks, and slight scrapes. Mechanically excellent with clear markings. The case is good with some cracks and minor storage wear on the exterior and some slight stains and tears on the interior. The accessories are very good including the stock which has clear carved designs and only minor dings and light scratches. Overall, a very rare and attractive complete set.
