Description:

This is an example of a Northwest flintlock trade musket manufactured by the famous British company Barnett. It is important to note that the Flintlock system remained popular in Indian country long after the percussion system was introduced because flints were often easier to come by in remote areas. The round ended lock plate is marked "BARNETT/LONDON" over an illegible date (possibly 1867?) behind the hammer with a "Fox/EB" proofmark struck below the pan. The lock and hammer have a simple double line border. The upper left barrel flat is stamped with a "crown/GP" proof, the number "24", a "crown/V" proof and the letters "J.S.B." An additional "Fox/EB" proofmark is stamped on the top barrel flat. This mark was used by the Hudson Bay Company after its purchase of the North West Company in 1821.The part octagon barrel is equipped with a blade front sight and there is an added notch rear sight. The ornate brass side plate is shaped like a mythical serpent/dragon that is the distinctive mark of the Northwest gun. It also has the oversized trigger and trigger guard commonly seen on trade guns. It is fitted on a full length stock with carved accents behind the plates and the barrel tang. The butt has a round stamp on the right side and a flat butt secured by four screws at the back (two absent) and one on the upper tang. It includes a ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period shortened. The barrel, lock, and trigger guard have some traces of the original brown finish with mostly a brown patina overall. The brass components have an aged patina. The markings are visible but partially faded. The stock is in very good condition with some mild scratches and dings as well as some near the cock. Mechanically fine. This is a wonderful example of a Northwest trade gun. Few survive in this good of a condition!
