Description:

This flintlock is marked with what appears to be "JOSEPH/GOLCHER" on the lock plate below a feather ahead of the hammer. A boar head with an arrow and horn motif is at the rear of the lock plate. A somewhat similar arrow and boar head motif is on the buttplate tang. The most distinctive aspect is the plaque with "Roman nosed" Indian equipped with a bow and quiver on the wrist. Guns with this plaque are often referred to as "Chief" or "Chieftain" grade arms. Charles Hanson notes in the book THE NORTHWEST GUN (p. 54): "It is believed that many of these guns were distributed to allied tribes in the years just preceding the War of 1812." Other sources also suggest that arms ornamented in this style as opposed to the traditional "Northwest" pattern were used as gifts during council sessions to foster good will among potential allies and were given to influential tribe and clan members including but not exclusively leaders starting near 1812 and continuing into the 1830s. The trigger guard has a floral motif and finial. The side plate has a shield motif. The barrel has a circled sitting fox facing left mark that is different in style than the mark commonly seen on "Northwest" trade guns, a "*/RW" mark that is associated with Richard Wilson and later his son, and an unclear oval proof. It has a blade front sight and is fitted on a full length stock. A ramrod with brass tip is included.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The reconverted to Flintlock barrel and lock have a brown patina with some pitting and various minor scratches and marks. The remaining brass components have an attractive aged patina with some minor marks. The medallion is bright with a darkened background. The stock is very good as refinished with some scratches and dings, a few small chips, and a hairline crack near the upper side plate screw. Overall, this is a very interesting piece that may have been an important presentation during an influential council session.
