Description:

This rifle is similar in many respects to a 1840 pattern Brunswick rifle with its dark finished stock, patch box design with two interior compartments, belted barrel, sword style bayonet, and other attributes. It was likely produced in India under British rule or Nepal given the Sanskrit style markings on the interior of the patch box lid and a few other components. Many of the brass parts, including the bayonet handle, are more crudely made than the British produced Brunswicks. The barrel is equipped with a square stud front sight and a two leaf (one folding, one stationary) rear sight. There is a bar mounted on the right side of the muzzle for mounting the bayonet. The stock is secured by three wedges and there is an iron button head ram rod held by two brass pipes. The brass trigger guard has a grip extension and a sling swivel is mounted on the front. There is another swivel mounted on the muzzle end of the stock. Mounted with a full straight grip stock with brass buttplate. The bayonet has a 22" unmarked blade.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The metal surfaces have a mottled brown and gray patina with scattered minor pitting. The brass has a dark aged patina with signs of some cleaning on the patch box. The refinished stock is good with a small moderate gouge near the toe and overall scattered minor dents, chips and dings. The bayonet is also good with mottled gray patina and signs of some sharpening. The brass handle and guard have a dark aged patina. The action is fine.
