Description:

Developed as a result of British experience gained during the French Revolutionary War, the 1796 was designed with inspiration from Eastern Europe and further points, and was a British standard through the War of 1812. Measuring 37 1/4 inches overall, with a 33 inch curved single fuller blade, showing a fine niter blue finish on the lower 2/3rds accented with gold highlighted engraving, decorated with floral and martial themes, along with the proper Royal Coat of Arms and cipher (GR) for the era. Fitted with an iron hilt, featuring a pair of unmarked languets, stirrup guard and a ribbed wood grip. With an unmarked iron scabbard.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Over 50% of the original niter blue/gold wash is present on the fine blade, with a bright appearance to the remainder, scattered spotting, a few areas of brown patina and minor pitting concentrated on the upper third. A few light chips are present on the edge, which shows evidence of a light, conservative sharpening. The hilt is fair, with a mixed patina on the metal, scattered pitting, and the wrap absent from the grip. The scabbard is good, with the rear suspension ring stud being a braised-on replacement and the overall appearance being similar to the hilt.
