Description:

The back action lock plate of this break action pistol is marked "J. LAWSON" near the top, and the top of the barrel is marked "J. LAWSON. 70 ARGYLE ST GLASGOW." Lawson is recorded around 1860 as a custom gunmaker and dealer of Tranter Patent revolvers. The flat top barrel has a dovetailed blade front and V notch rear sights. Removal of the forend reveals the matching number "202" and small number "56" with "4/10" and crossed flag style proofs. Breech loading is facilitated using a break lever on the upper tang. There are some light engraving designs on the borders and some small components such as the screws. It is fitted with a checkered target style stock and forend with a horn forend cap and metal grip cap. Quite possibly a back up gun for a safari hunter.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The pistol retains 80% of the original blue finish and 60% of the vivid case colors with a dark gray patina where the colors are fading. There are some light scratches and a few marks scattered throughout. The wood is also very fine with crisp checkering and only some superficial scratches and pressure marks. Mechanically excellent with clear markings.
