This is a wheelock action/lock that was once part of a hunting rifle likely from one of the German principalities in the mid 18th century. It has nearly full coverage engraving making it a beautiful example of the antique art of firearms making and engraving. The rear of the place has a hunting scene of two hunters, one on horse back and one with a leashed dog and two dogs pounced on a downed elk in a lightly wooded scene. The upper and lower jaw have the faces of mythical beasts, and the remaining areas have floral/scroll work. Even some of the internal components have light engraving. The plate is 8 inches in length not counting the dog or dog spring.

Very good. The surfaces have a gray patina with some minor pitting. The engraving patterns and scene remain clear.
