Description:

Series I Pocket Model revolver manufactured by the Manhattan Fire Arms Co., of Newark, New Jersey, circa 1860. The barrel is marked: "London Pistol Company". Manhattan Series I and Series II Pocket Model revolvers with London Pistol Company markings were second quality firearms that had imperfections in finish or other defects. Manhattan Pocket Model pistols with London Pistol Company markings are very rare. This Series I pistol has the five-shot cylinder with ten stops, small oval trigger guard and small grips. The barrel, cylinder and frame have a high polish blue finish and the loading lever and hammer are color casehardened. The revolver has two-piece grips. The sides of the barrel lug, frame, top of the back strap and bottom of the trigger guard are factory engraved with good quality Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "LONDON PISTOL COMPANY" in a rectangle with hand engraved flourishes. "PATENTED/DEC.27. 1859" is stamped across the bottom of the frame in front of the trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-engraved with a detailed stage hold-up scene. The serial number "67" is stamped: (1) on the right side of the frame underneath the grip, (2) on the rear face of the cylinder, (3) on the underside of the barrel and (4) on the wedge. "67" is written in pencil on the inside of the right grip. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver is all original and retains 25% of the blue and casehardened finish. Significant amounts of blue finish are present on the sides and bottom of the barrel. The balance of the barrel, cylinder and frame have an even, gray, patina. The hammer and lever retain 40% of the dove-gray case colors. The cylinder has some scratches and age discoloration but retains nearly all of the holdup scene, there is light flash pitting on the percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder. The well executed engraving is sharp. The markings and serial numbers are clear. The grips are in very good overall condition. The left grip has a yellow-brown age discoloration but the right grip has almost no discoloration. Wear is limited to one hair-line crack in the left heel. The cylinder does not turn when the hammer is cocked. This is an attractive example of a rare Manhattan Series I Pocket Revolver with London Pistol Company markings.
