Description:

The First Model rifles were manufactured in Richmond, Virginia and have been recorded with dates from about 1805 to 1808. Only 200 to 240 are estimated to have been produced. This example is dated "1809" at the rear of the lock plate below "RICHMOND". The lock plate is also marked "VIRGINIA/Manufactory" with the latter in script. The top of the barrel has multiple small regimental marks (appears "93 91 V. R G'T") followed by "DINWIDDIE". The town of Dinwiddie and surrounding area were the sight of multiple Civil War battles in 1865. The rifle also features the correct First Model snake shaped patch box which has been inscribed "Don't tread on me" and has scale engraving. The patch box is opened via a button on the buttplate tang. It has the correct first model style trigger guard, but this example deviates from the standard form in that it is fitted with a shorter barrel in a higher caliber and is equipped with double set triggers. It has a full, pin fastened, straight wrist stock with slightly raise cheek piece and slightly raise comb, blade front and notch rear sights and correct style gooseneck cock.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The reconverted to Flintlock configuration rifle features a varied partially refinished brown patina with some traces of the original blue finish and spots of brighter oxidation. The lock plate and cock remain mostly bright with some dark patina. There are various scratches and marks mixed throughout. The refinished, restored wood is fair with some minor cracks/repairs, scratches and dings. Mechanically fine with mostly clear markings.
