Description:

The included document discusses how the Confederacy supplemented their armed forces with many privately made firearms including an array of modified Kentucky rifles, double barrel shotguns, sporting rifles and others. This rifle would have originally been a carefully crafted Kentucky rifle with front and rear sights mounted to each of the octagonal barrels and two ramrods slid along the fluted rib. It has since been altered by the removal of the sights and the modification or repair of many components. One of the ramrods was discarded so that a crude bayonet mount could be fixed to the side and the modified U.S. style bayonet could be used. The barrel assembly rotates to allow for two relatively succinct shots. It is mounted with a straight wrist maple stock with an ornate and lightly engraved patch box on the right, a silver initial plate on the wrist and a slightly raised cheek piece with a German silver fox. The likely re-bored 52 caliber barrels are unmarked. One ramrod with hand notched end is included

Rating Definition:

Very good for a Confederate used weapon. The rifle features a mottled brown patina with some areas of minor pitting and an aged patina on the brass components. The wood is in very good condition with some slight dings and scrapes and a small hairline crack at the upper tang. The fox tail is cracked but complete. The action could use some work but will hold and trigger from half cock. The bayonet has a mottled dark brown patina. Overall a very interesting altered rifle that, while somewhat crude, would have been a deadly weapon.
