Description:

This modified musket has "SC" on the barrel tang and "1852" on the lock. The left side of the barrel has "V/P/tree" proofs and inspection marks and "W.G. & CO." on the left flat. The "PALMETTO ARMORY/S*C" in a circle around a palm tree markings are partially visible ahead of the hammer. This example has a single bead front sight and has a carbine style half stock with "J.A.S." stamped on the butt under the flat iron buttplate and a unclear cartouche on the left flat. The bottom of the barrel has a single ramrod pipe for the absent ramrod. Only 6,000 Palmetto Model 1842s are believed to have been made for the State of South Carolina and some were no doubt used during the Civil War by the Confederacy. The sling swivel is absent from the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Fair (as cut down) for a weapon likely used by the Confederacy and subsequently modified to a shotgun. The musket has a varied dark brown patina with dark "blue" areas and patches of pitting of varying severity. There are marks and scratches throughout. Some of the markings are partially obliterated but most are decipherable. The stock is fair with scuffs, scrapes and dings and some slivers absent at the ramrod entrance. Mechanically fine with a chip on the hammer.
