Description:

The Palmer carbine, manufactured by E.G. Lamson & Co. of Windsor, Vermont, is significant as the first metallic cartridge, bolt-action weapon accepted by the Ordnance Department for issue to the U.S. Army. This example has blade front and folding leaf rear sights graduated 1-5. It has "MM" and single letter inspection stamps and a matching cartouche. "WM PALMER/PATENT/DEC. 22, 1863" is marked near the handle, and "U.S./E.G LAMSON. & CO./WINDSOR,VT" is marked on the lock plate ahead of the hammer with "1865" at the rear. It is fitted with an oil finished walnut stock with one barrel band and a carbine buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel has a mottled brown patina with some bright scrapes. The other components retain 30% of the case colors with some bright wear on the buttplate. The bolt mechanism remains partially bright with some gray patina. The wood is in fine condition with a lighter tone on the left side of the butt, some small abrasions, and minor pressure marks along with a clear cartouche and sharp stamp. Mechanically fine with mostly crisp markings. Overall, a very good example of the first bolt action metallic cartridge firearm accepted for U.S. issuance.
