Manufactured circa 1862 to 1865, this breech loading carbine is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co/PROVIDENCE= R.I." on the lock plate, "BURNSIDE PATENT/MARCH 25th 1856" on top of the frame over the serial number. The top of the barrel is marked with "PW" behind the rear sight and "CAST=STEEL 186[?]" in front of the rear sight. The rear sight has a folding blade with two apertures. The breechblock is numbered "35009". It has the "5th Model" guide screw that enters the center of the frame on the right and rides in a groove on the breechblock. It is fitted with a walnut forearm secured by a single barrel band and a straight grip stock with a steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The carbine retains traces of the blue finish with an otherwise smooth brown patina on the barrel and a mottled brown patina on the other components. Most of the markings are clear. The wood is good with numerous dings, scrapes, and chips as is typical for a weapon that saw hard service during the Civil War. There is a repaired crack ahead of the barrel band. An illegible cartouche is faintly visible above the trigger on the left side of the wrist. Mechanically excellent. Considering its likely Civil War use, this carbine is in good shape.
