Description:

This First Model Merrill Carbine has a brass barrel band, trigger guard, and patch box. The lock plate has a beveled edge and is marked with the serial number "8474" vertically at the rear of the lock and "J.H. MERRILL BALTO/PAT. JULY.1858./APL.9 MAY 21-28-61" below the bolster. "J. H. MERRILL BALTO/PAT. JULY 1858" is marked on top of the breech with the matching serial number at the rear. "6/11" is marked on the inside of the patch box and the breech. The carbine has a three-leaf, folding rear sight graduated to 500 yards that also serves as the breech lever latch. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the stock flat which also has a faint cartouche on the left flat.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel and breech have an even light brown patina. The brass components have an aged patina. Other components are partially bright with some spotting. There are some light scratches and minor marks overall. The revarnished wood has a cut in the bottom behind the wrist, some minor dings and scratches, and some chipping near the barrel band. Mechanically fine with clear markings aside from the cartouche.
