4,300 of these New Model 1859 Rifles were manufactured between 1859 to 1866. 1,500 went to the U.S. Army and another 2,800 to the Navy. It is marked "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO/HARTFORD, CONN" ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1859" at the breech on top of the barrel. It has a pinched blade front sight, R.S. Lawrence patent rear sight graduated to 800 yards, three barrel bands with sling swivel on the middle band, iron patch box and single trigger. It has the standard Sharps and Lawrence patent markings and is equipped with a lug for a sword bayonet on the underside of the barrel 2 1/2 inches back of the muzzle. The rifle is mounted on a smooth walnut forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock. A leather sling is attached.

Rating Definition:

Good. The rifle retains traces of the original finish with primarily mottled gray and brown patina with some spotting and light pitting. The reoiled wood is also good with a crack on the right at the junction with the frame along with some small pressure marks and occasional scratches. Mechanically fine with clear markings. The leather sling is in very good condition.
