Description:

This is one of approximately 3000 Peabody rifles manufactured for the Canadian Government, circa 1866. Originally the contract was for 5,000 rifles however only 3,000 were actually delivered, with most being stored until they were later sold as surplus in 1898. Providence Tool Company originally developed the Peabody in anticipation of American military contracts, but the close of the Civil War led to most of the rifles being sold on the commercial market or to foreign governments. Blade front and 2-leaf folding European style rear sights, with "MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I." on the right side of the frame and "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22, 1862" on the left. Single letter proofs are present on several components. Smooth straight wrist stock, with three "U" marked barrel bands, a small oval cartouche on the left side of the wrist and a smooth buttplate. The origonal caliber was 50-60 rimfire.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel shows 75% plus of a dull military blue finish, with a brown patina on the remainder, tool marks on either side of the breech and scattered spotting and handling marks. 60% plus color remains on the casehardened components, particularly on the right side of the frame, with some silvering and spotting. The stock is fine, with "CB" added to the forearm and buttstock, mild dents and a few scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
