Description:

This is very fine, early Civil War production example of the U. S. Springfield Model 1861 rifle-musket that was the primary Civil War musket as used by the Union forces. The lock plate has the standard "Eagle/Shield" motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" markings ahead of the hammer and is dated "1862" behind it. The left barrel flat has the standard "V/P/Eagle Head" proof and inspection marks, and the top of the barrel is dated "1862". It is finished bright with a blade front and three leaf rear sights, clean out screw on the bolster, tulip head steel ramrod and mounted with an oil finished black walnut stock with a crisp "ESA" cartouche on the left flat and "U.S." marked on the buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. This example was likely not issued and may not have even been fired. The surfaces have some darker patina forming and some light oxidation but remain mostly "white" and have a few small nicks and light scratches. The stock is also in very fine condition with a few small dings and pressure marks along with a few minor scrapes and light scratches. The cartouche and markings remain very clear, and the action is excellent.
