Description:

Originally made as a New Model 1863 carbine during the Civil War, this is one of many New Model carbines arsenal converted in the late 1860's to metallic cartridge for use in the Indian Wars. These post-war conversions were altered to fire the .50-70 Government center fire cartridge. These carbines were completely refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process and if needed the stocks were replaced with ones not having a patch box as is the case with this example. The barrel is largely unmarked aside from "58" and "[?]4467" on the bottom under the forearm. During the factory refinishing it is likely that the other barrel markings were removed. It has a brass blade front sight and carbine style folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The lock is marked with the Sharps and Lawrence patent dates and the left side of the frame is marked with the Sharps patent marking and the serial number on the upper tang. It is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a saddle ring bar and ring on the left wrist, a visible "RTS" cartouche on the left wrist above the saddle ring bar and a "DFC" ribbon cartouche on the left side of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus as arsenal refurbished. The barrel retains 50% blue with the balance a smooth brown patina. The lock shows almost all of the vivid case colors. The receiver retains 40% case colors with a smooth dark patina on the balance. The wood is also very fine with a few minor dents and handling marks and faded but legible cartouches. The other visible markings are clear. The action is excellent.
