Description:

The lock plate of this musket is marked "1864" behind the hammer with the "American Eagle" motif and "U.S./BRIDESBURG" at the front. The only visible markings on the barrel are the "V/P/eagle head" proofs on the upper left flat. The barrel bands have "U" marked on the left side, and the buttplate tang has "U.S" marked on the tang. It has a fixed blade front sight and rear sight with two folding leaves marked "3" and "5". It is mounted with a nearly full length, straight grip stock secured by three barrel bands and fitted with a curved buttplate and forend cap. Sling swivels are mounted to the middle barrel band and the front of the trigger guard. An interesting "I.N." mark is found near the middle of the left flat. This marking has become accepted as an Irish National mark and is made all the more interesting by the fact that Bridesburg muskets are known to have been used by the Fenian Brotherhood during their failed raids into Canada after the Civil War. They hoped that they could use a capture of Canada to pressure the British into pulling out of Ireland. The musket also includes a tulip headed ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Good. The musket has an overall brown patina with some patches of oxidation and pitting throughout. The pitting is most visible at the breech. The stock is very good with a worn out splice of wood absent at the top rear of the lock, wear at the breech and rear edge of the butt, and a generally smooth surface with some minor pressure marks and small scratches as well as some strikes on the left side of the butt. Mechanically fine with all visible markings clear.
