Description:

This is an example of the a Civil War era rifle converted to fire the .50-70 center fire cartridge. These conversions were refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process. It has a blade front sight on a base that also serves a bayonet lug and a folding, adjustable leaf rear sight with Lawrence patent marked base graduated to 800 yards on the ladder. The barrel has faint "NEW MODEL" markings with the year not visible. However, the serial number "54561" is marked on the bottom of the barrel and on the upper tang and falls within the normal range for a New Model 1859. The receiver and lock have the standard Sharps and Lawrence patent markings. It is mounted with a smooth oil finished walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a iron carbine buttplate. Additionally, the right side of the action is custom marked "WG Jr", and the top of the butt just ahead of the buttplate tang has an unclear stamp.

Rating Definition:

Very good as refinished and altered. The barrel retains 70% of the blue finish with some areas thinned almost to bare. Traces of the case colors remain with the remained faded to a gray patina. There are some minor scratches and marks throughout. The refinished wood is very good with a hairline crack on the right side of the forearm at the junction with the frame and otherwise only a few light scratches and slight dings. Mechanically excellent. As mentioned above, most of the markings are clear.
