Description:

This U. S. Springfield Model 1861 rifle-musket is crudely restamped "1862" behind the hammer and on the barrel and has the other standard lock plate and barrel markings. The Model 1861 was the primary firearm used by Union forces and was designed after the Maynard tape system proved flawed during field use. Although nearly 1,000,000 Model 1861 Rifle-Muskets were manufactured by Springfield Armory and various contractors during the Civil War, most Springfield Armory muskets manufactured during the first years of production saw hard service and are desirable. It is finished bright and features blade front and three leaf rear sights, clean out screw on the bolster, tulip head steel ramrod with swelled shank, and is mounted with an oil finished walnut stock with faint cartouches on the left flat, three barrel bands ("U" visible on two of them), sling swivels on the middle band and front of the trigger guard, and a "U.S." marked buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Poor. The iron surfaces are partially bright with spotting and light pitting and some minor scratches. The wood is good as sanded and re-oiled with some small pressure marks, a few small chips, and scattered minor scrapes. Mechanically fine with mostly legible markings.
