Description:

The Colt Model 1860 was the revolver most used by Union soldiers during the Civil War. Civilian examples such as this were nearly identical to their martial counterparts with the exception of three frame screws and generally a high quality finish. These revolvers no doubt also provided a sense of security for those living on the frontier and the bustling cities during the post-war years. They were accurate out to 75-100 yards. This example was manufactured in 1866 and has the one-line New York address on the top of the barrel. The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT", and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval battle scene and marked "COLTS PATENT No 9560". The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9560" is marked on the cylinder pin and the cylinder. The wedge is un-numbered. It has blade front and hammer notch rear sights and is fitted with a smooth varnished walnut grip. The left side rear shoulder of the trigger guard is marked "44 CAL".

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 50% of the bright original high polish blue finish with a smooth brown patina. Most of the cylinder scene is visible, and there are a number of minor dents on the cylinder along with a drag line. The frame retains 50% bright original case colors, mainly in the protected areas, with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The hammer retains much of the original case colors. The trigger guard has a pleasant dark mottled aged patina. The grips are also very fine with most of the original varnish remaining, some wear on the lower edges, and a few minor dents and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. Overall this is a great example of one of the most iconic American firearms.
