Colt Fourth Model 1851 Navy revolver manufactured in 1866. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The loading lever, hammer and frame have a color casehardened finish. The one-piece black walnut grip is varnished. The revolver has late Fourth Model features, large oval trigger guard, capping cut-out in the recoil shield, beveled loading cut-out and thick style loading lever latch. The hammer spur has bordered knurling. The trigger guard and back strap are iron with a blue finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. "36 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLT'S PATENT No.". The full serial number "186188" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "188" is stamped on the top of the loading lever and the cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "6188". Colt "L" inspection marks are stamped on the frame, trigger guard and back strap.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 70% of the original high polish blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel has some minor edge wear. There are a number of shallow dents on the right side of the lug surrounding the wedge slot. The cylinder has a blue-brown patina with traces of original finish in protected areas. The naval battle scene is light but mostly intact. The cylinder pins are battered and there is flash pitting on the percussion nipples and rear portion of the cylinder. The trigger guard and back strap retain nearly 90% of the high polish blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer have more than 90% of the subdued case colors intact. The frame, trigger guard and back strap screws retain much of the fire blue finish and are very good. The grip is very good overall with light-moderate handling wear. All of the markings on the barrel and frame are crisp. The action functions well. This is a very fine example of a post-Civil War Model 1851 Navy revolver with rarely encountered iron back strap and trigger guard.
