Description:

Manufactured in 1861, this is a spectacular example of a first year production cased Colt Model 1862 Police percussion revolver presented by Colonel Samuel Colt to D.H. Craig. It is known that Colt revolvers were specially inscribed and presented by Samuel Colt to government officials, military leaders, business associates and personal friends. This example is inscribed "D.H. Craig/with Compliments of Col Colt" on the back strap. As of this writing, D.H. Craig has not been identified. Nevertheless, Colt revolvers inscribed and presented by Samuel Colt are among the most desirable of all Colt percussion revolvers. The top of the barrel is marked "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S.AMERICA", the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT", and "36 CAL" is marked on the left trigger guard shoulder. The 1850 patent marking is stamped on a cylinder flute. Full matching serial number is stamped on the underside of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap, rear of the cylinder, cylinder pin and barrel wedge. High polished blue finish, casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever with silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap. Fitted with a smooth one-piece varnished walnut grip. The partitioned rosewood case is lined in red velvet and contains a W. Pursall & Co. cap tin, lead balls, double eagle face Colt powder flask, combination tool (nipple wrench/screwdriver) and package of combustible cartridges for the Police revolver. The top of the lid has an unmarked brass inlaid initial shield that matches the lock escutcheon.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The cylinder and barrel retain 95% plus bright original high polished blue finish showing some thinning to a gray. The loading lever, hammer and frame retain 97% plus original bright and vivid case colors. The grip straps retain nearly all of the original silver plating. The grips are also excellent with a few minor handling marks and retaining most of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine showing limited loss of the veneer, minor handling/storage marks and high spot wear on the faded lining. The excellent original powder flask and combination tool retain nearly all of their respective finishes. A high conditioned Colt Model 1862 Police percussion revolver presented by Colonel Samuel Colt that would enhance even the most advanced Colt percussion revolver collections!
