Manufactured in 1882, this is a nice example of a scarce Colt Model 1878 double barrel shotgun. Colt manufactured only about 22,700 of these shotguns in 12 and 10 gauge from 1878 to 1889. The shotgun features an extra set of barrels with a forearm. Both barrel sets are 30 inches in length, have a brown Damascus pattern, a single brass bead sight and are marked with the one line address on top of the smooth concave solid rib with dolls head extension. Both have 3 inch chambers and extractors. Both sets of barrels and forearms are numbered to the gun with a "2" on the underside of one barrel set and one forearm. Both walnut forearms are checkered, one with an ebony forend insert and the other with a contrasting insert. Each lock is marked "Colt's Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co." and the serial number appears on the lower tang. Casehardened frame, locks and hammers, blue trigger guard and break lever. Mounted with a multi-point checkered round knob pistol grip stock with a checkered hard rubber Rampant Colt buttplate. Length of pull is 13 3/4 inches.

Very good. Barrel set "2" retains 30% original brown finish and almost all of the Damascus pattern. The other set retains 80% original brown finish and almost all of the Damascus pattern. The side plates retain 30% plus original bright case colors mainly in protected areas with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The frame has a smooth silver gray patina. The triggers have a smooth mottled gray patina. Both forearms are very good with a few minor bruises in the checkering and some scattered minor dings and dents. The hardware on both has a smooth silver gray patina. The recheckered stock is good with a lighter color than the recheckered forearms and shows scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The checkering is crisp. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
