Description:

These rifles are very rare and significant in the Martial Arms rifle field as they ushered in the era of the small caliber, smokeless powder, bolt action rifles for the US Military. This specific rifle is significant in that it is a very rare and desirable first model 1892 rifle that was produced in the first group of serial numbers in 1894. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S/1894 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY", next to the Serial Number "31". It still has many of the early features not usually found on this model because of the numerous changes that they underwent. The rifle still retains the following early features: the early style serrated bolt, one-piece closed front barrel band, flat smooth top surface of the extractor with extractor screw, flat buttplate without trap, full length exposed ramrod channel (with the second pattern all steel ramrod), Model 1892 rear sight and the original first pattern thin wrist stock. The stock is correctly cartouched with a boxed "SWP over 1894" on the left side along with a (block) "J" proof on the pistol grip.

Rating Definition:

Very good as partially restored. The barrel, action, and metal parts have a smooth gray patina overall with areas of thinned original blue. The cleaning rod has some small areas of spotting. The stock is very good as refinished with attractive grain, small scattered pressure indentations, and a beautifully oiled finish. Mechanically excellent.
