Description:

This very interesting grouping includes many items from the military service of Major. Louis Brittson. Brittson served as an Ordinance Department inspector throughout the country (including at the Rock Island Arsenal and Aberdeen Proving Grounds) after active service in the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection. The various documents clearly demonstrate that he was held in high esteem by many of those he served and worked with. His discharge from 1906 lists "Character and Service Excellent." The grouping includes: Brittson's framed appointment as ensign in the "Navel Battalion of the Militia of the District of Columbia" dated April 25, 1898, and signed by Theodore Roosevelt during his term as Assistant Secretary of the Navy; framed appointment to the ordinance department; uniform with Major insignias, U.S. and Ordnance bomb emblem pins on the collar, two "MARKSMAN" pins, service boards, and leather belt with shoulder strap; "LEB" monogrammed Victorian style cane with floral and scroll relief engraved handle; "L.E. BRITTSON" marked U.S. Navy sword with naval themed etched blade and ray skin grip by S.N. Meyer of Washington, D.C. with scabbard and tassel; a pair of binoculars from the U.S. Naval Gun Factory Optical Shop Annex in Rochester, N.Y., in a matching case with integral compass; a Navy themed belt/buckle and ring; three shadow boxes with pins, medals, and badges; two pairs of gloves in a leather sleeve; a cleaning kit in case; a large number of personal and governmental letters and documents relating to his service and life including photographs from his time as an inspector, during the service, and other periods of his life; and a number of personal items including a handmade cigarette cased with "LEB" on the lid made for him by his daughter, a straight razor in case marked "JOHN SHAW'S/ CELEBRATED RAZOR" on the left side of the shank, medicine kit, address book, and more. Overall condition: fine to very good.
