Description:

Measuring 37 1/2 inches overall, with a 31 3/4 inch curved single fuller blade, with gold highlighting in a 15 inch panel starting on the ricasso, etched vinework and a stamped "GERMANY" on the spine, patriotic/scroll etching on the sides, and a brass "PROVED" stamp in a 6-pointed star on the right ricasso. The gilt brass hilt is decorated with extensive feather and leaf patterns, with a grooved black plastic grip and a red eyed eagle head pommel. With a nickel finished scabbard, fitted with scroll decorated throat, suspension band and tip, and engraved "F.E. BERTHOLET/FROM/TROOP B. 1st CAVALRY/APRIL 1930" between the throat and band. Research indicates Frank Edmund Bertholet was born in 1896, joined the United States Military Academy in 1914, and received his 2nd Lieutenant commission in 1917. Earning a promotion to 1st Lieutenant shortly after graduation, he was breveted to Captain and returned to USMA as a mathematics instructor in 1918.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall, with some light handling marks and edge wear overall. The sword embellishment is all strong and sharp. The scabbard shows some mild flaking and nickel loss.
