Description:

Predating the rise of the Nazi party, the knife of the State Forest Service (Staatsforstdienst) served as a badge of honor and rank, with white colored grips reserved for senior officials and Foresters. Unlike many organizations that were co-opted by the Nazis, the symbols of the Forest Service were not significantly altered, and as a result very few Forester's knives are found with overt Nazi symbols or regalia. Measuring 17 3/4 inches overall, the blade is Damascus pattern, 13 1/4 inches in length with no visible makers marks on the ricasso. The hilt is gilt alloy with a bugling elk on the languet, a deer hoof rear quillion, a Nazi eagle on the obverse ferrule, pheasant on the reverse, and a pair of smooth original ivory grips with a set of three gilt brass acorn badges on each side. With a black leather sheath fitted with a gilt brass tip and acorn and a gilt steel throat. Included with the knife is a notarized letter from LTC (Ret.) Thomas M. Johnson of Johnson Reference Books, that describes a nearly identical Senior Forester Knife, and a letter from John Pearson who believes that the knife was produced by Tiger Werke of Solingen, which would make it one of only a few known Tiger Foresters on the market.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with some light handling marks overall. The felt buffer pad is absent with traces of green material on the sheath throat. The excellent grips show a few small handling marks and an attractive grain and color.
