Description:

This pistol was made by DWM expressly for the American arms market with the signature American Eagle on top of the chamber. The rear sight is a conventional "v" notch with a dovetailed blade front sight. It is fitted with an early pattern Luger bolt and toggle assembly with the flat top bolt, unmarked extractor, and dished toggle knobs with spring-loaded toggle lock. It has commercial pattern serial numbering with matching external numbers and "GERMANY" on the front of the frame. It is equipped with straw finished small components, a grip safety, checkered grips, and a nickel bodied magazine with a "GERMANY" marked wood base. Also included is an unmarked brown leather flap holster. The included notarized affidavit from Gifford Pinchot's great grandson indicates that this is one of six firearms the family is making available through Rock Island Auction Company. The remaining firearms were donated to the U.S. Forest Service Museum or remain in the family's possession. Gifford Pinchot was an American conservation pioneer and first Chief of the Forest Service. He coined the phrase "conservation ethic" and was fired by Taft for criticizing the President's policies. The ensuing fallout led to the split of the Republican Party and the creation of the Progressive Party under Pinchot's close friend Theodore Roosevelt. An excerpt from Pinchot's conservation diaries dated 30 November 1904 mentions taking a Luger with him on a camping trip and successfully hitting a deer with it. Pinchot was a member of Boone and Crockett Club. A copy of his membership from 1911 is included with the lot.

Rating Definition:

Near fine with 70% of the original blue finish showing a bright gray patina along the edges, brown on the grip straps, and scattered handling marks and spotting overall. A section of the broken takedown lever is absent with some traces of the original straw color. The wood is very good with a few chips absent from the left panel around the safety and magazine release, and a few scattered dings and dents. The holster is fair with scuffing, scratches, and cracks. Mechanically functions fine but cannot be disassembled.
