Description:

This is a very rare example of a WWI-era U.S. Army contract Remington Model 10 Trench Gun. The Remington Model 10 Trench Gun is probably one of the rarest U.S. contract trench/combat shotguns. Original Remington Model 10 trench gun examples have been noted in the 160,000-165,000 serial number range, with this example being numbered "162763" correctly on the underside of the receiver and on the right underside of the barrel just in front of the receiver. The left front edge of the receiver has the hand stamped Ordnance Corps "shell & flame" insignia, over "U.S.". Original Remington Model 10 Trench Gun had a 23 inch length barrel with a distinctive wooden hand guard that covers the upper surfaces of the barrel. The bayonet lug is separate from the hand guard and is attached by three screws secured by transverse grooves on the underside of the barrel. The walnut hand guard is secured to the barrel by two spring clips riveted on the underside of the wooden hand guard. The spring clips are located one towards the end of the magazine tube and the other end attached directly to the top front edge of the receiver with two screws. The upper sling swivel is screwed to the underside of the magazine tube. The stock and forend are oil finished walnut. The stock is fitted with a checkered, black, hard rubber buttplate with the Remington logo in a circle. The lower rear tang has the "REMINGTON/UMC" logo stamped in a circle directly over "TRADEMARK". The barrel markings are covered by the wooden hand guard, however the side of the slide bar is marked: "TRADE REMINGTON MARK" in one line.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with replaced buttstock. The barrel, and receiver retain 85% plus of the original blue finish, with areas of edge and high spot wear with scattered dings and handling marks mixed with areas of brown patina overall. The wooded hand guard is fine, with scattered dents and handling marks with a 4 inch crack down the center rear of the hand guard which has had an additional coat of varnish added. The stock is very fine as a commercial replacement as it is missing the lower sling swivel and it has had a coat of varnish added instead of the oiled finish. The stock also shows scattered dents and dings throughout, and a 2 inch crack at the rear of the receiver on the right side with a small chip on the lower left corner/edge. Mechanically excellent.
