Description:

Produced at an unknown date, this pistol has the Springfield "flaming grenade" inspection proof on the left side of the grenade and a Colt-range serial number on the right, many thousand below the known starting number for Springfield production; notes from the consignor state that the frame was produced by Springfield as a replacement for a destroyed Colt frame and numbered to match the original Colt. This is confirmed in a letter from Franklin B. Mallory Chief researcher at Springfield Armory. The pistol was shipped back to Springfield in May of 1915 for repairs and evaluation. Also included is a copy of the report from the Chief of Ordnance that the pistol had been "run over by a vehicle". The story is further expanded upon in an article in the September 2003 issue of "Gun Report" by Edward Scott Meadows. This issue of the magazine is included as well as a letter from the author Edward S. Meadows. Blade front and round top rear sights, with the two-line, two-block patent dates and address on the left side of the slide, the Rampant Colt behind the serrations, and "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY" on the right. Fitted with a long smooth hammer, checkered wide trigger, checkered slide stop and thumb safety, short grip safety, smooth back strap, checkered grips with diamond flats, two-tone pinned base magazine with lanyard staple, and a "S P" Springfield barrel.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as Springfield arsenal refurbished, with 90% of the rust blue finish, showing some mild dings and spotting. Grips are very good as reoiled, with some scuffs and dents. Mechanically excellent.
