Description:

Measuring 17 3/4 inches in overall length, this dagger is fitted with a 12 3/4 inch straight double fuller blade, showing a Damascus pattern overall, with a gold wash accented 3 inch etched panel of a crowned and fouled anchor over a Weyersberg helm on the obverse, "A. LUNEBERG KIEL" on the side of the ricasso, and a 3 inch etched and gold washed panel of a sailing ship over the retention hook on the reverse. The guard and pommel are brass, with "D.R.G.M./110746" on top of the guard, disc quillions, a wire wrapped original ivory grip, and a crown shaped pommel. With a brass sheath, decorated with oak leaf and lightning bolt designs, knotted rope shaped suspension bands, and "WACHTEL" on the reverse side near the throat. No information on Wachtel was supplied by the consignor, and a search shows more than one German Navy officer by that name.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The blade has been lightly cleaned, with the Damascus pattern visible at the ricasso, tip, and in the flutes, and 20% of the gilt finish, concentrated in the lower areas of the well defined etching. A small amount of play is present at the guard, with a fine aged brass patina overall and a few light age cracks in the grip and a ding in the pommel. The sheath is fair as repaired, with a long soldered crack on the lower half, dents, dings, and absent screws from the throat.
