Description:

Measuring 36 inches in overall length with a 30 1/2 inch blade. The blade is outfitted with a rolled spine, a "quill feather" flaring for the 11 inches of the false edge, and a 28 inch length of fine Damascus pattern from the tip back. 9 inches of the blade are washed in gold with the Eickhorn "two squirrel" logo on the left ricasso, "F. DAMASCHKE, HOFLIEFERANT BERLIN" (Hoflieferant = Purveyor to the Court) on the spine along with an oak leaf pattern and a 6 3/4 inch panel of decorative etching on each side. The right panel is enhanced with niter blue, and bears a banner reading "Herr s/r. Wuthenow Hersfeld 1909"; the identity of Wuthenow has not been verified, though he was likely a young officer from a wealthy but common family (note the absence of "v.", "von" or other noble particles or titles), and Hersfeld is located in the Fulda Valley in the Hesse region, a location of military significance through much of European history. The hilt is gilt brass with a lion head rear quillion, a bust of a woman on the right languet, fine raised oak leaf and acorn designs overall, a pierced-through three-dimensional oak leaf designs on the stirrup guard, wire wrapped sharkskin grip and a red-eyed lion head pommel. The scabbard is steel with a pair of brass suspension bands and one brass suspension ring.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The blade is very fine with some light fading of the gilt and niter blue finishes, sharp etching, clearly defined Damascus pattern and a small amount of spotting and handling marks. The throat pad is absent from the sword, and a small amount of play is detectable in the hilt. The guard assembly is excellent with a well aged brass visible on the high edges, a minor dent on the right side of the guard, mild handling wear on the sharkskin and attractive detail in all the embellishment. The scabbard is good as cleaned with traces of a blue finish around the suspension bands. The rear suspension ring has been cleanly removed with the relative aging of the brass suggesting that this modification was performed during the period of use.
