Description:

Measuring 37 3/4 inches in overall length with a 32 inch blade. The blade is outfitted with quillback spine, flared-out 11 inch false edge, a notably sharpened tip and a partially struck-out merchant's mark on the left side of the gold washed ricasso; while not completely legible, it appears to be a marking for one of the Hoflieferants (purveyors to the Imperial Court) of Berlin, which has been thoroughly hammer-peened and then overstruck with the knight's helm logo of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Company of Solingen. We have no answers as to why this was done. The lower 13 inches of the blade is finely gold washed with 3 inch gilt panels on the ricasso, an oak leaf and acorn design on the spine, and a 10 inch scroll and geometrical etched panel on each side. A gold wash is present on the hilt, which features a pair of sculpted crossed swords and laurels on the right languet, a set of burgher's arms (shield left blank) on the left, a lion's head rear quillion, "GESCHUTZTES/MUSTER" on top of the crossguard, raised oak leaf designs on the stirrup guard and spine, and a red-eyed lion head pommel. The portapee and grip are of unusual design, with the former being made from alternating woven strands of black and silver cord as opposed to a solid ribbon or length of leather, and the latter substituting a textured patent leather in place of rayskin. With a black enamel finished steel scabbard, fitted with a single hanging ring and marked "13" on the drag.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. A small amount of spotting and edge wear is present overall, along with a few light handling marks. The sharpening of the blade point and the alteration of the merchant markings appear to be from the period of use, with the point appearing to be professionally applied. Moderate streaking and flaking of the repainted enamel has occurred to the sheath with a brown patina on the exposed areas and some light scratches. An interesting and highly attractive Imperial German Cavalry Sword
