Description:

This W. Soper rifle was likely special ordered as it has custom features including scroll engraving and a checkered straight grip stock and forend with horn tip and naked checkered butt with steel toe and heel caps as well as a silver initial shield (rear sling stud removed). It also features a blade front and two leaf rear sight. The left side of the barrel is marked "HENRY'S [proof] PATENT" over "45 21/10". The left side of the breech mechanism is marked "INVENTOR & PATENTEE/W. SOPER/READING", and the interior of the action is marked with "303". "No. 303" is marked in script ahead of the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

About good as refinished overall. The finish has mostly thinned to form a smooth brown patina throughout. The engraving and markings remain crisp. There is some modern material on some of the lower metal components likely to protect them when the wood was refinished. The stock is very smooth with crisp checkering and some light chipping on the edges around the lower portion of the action/trigger guard. The breech mechanism on this example requires the safety mechanism to be depressed in order for it to close and functions excellently.
