Description:

Measuring 39 inches overall, the 27 3/4 inch blade shows a strong, relatively straight hamon, fine grain, and a two piece copper habaki with "cat scratch" engraved accents and gold and silver foil surfaces. The fittings are of the shin-gunto pattern with matching number "114" on the fuchi, seppa, and tsuba, cherry blossom accents and a brown cord wrap. The saya is of the matching style and comes with a purple cloth sword bag and a pair of cord tassels; one solid orange, the other orange and brown. A pair of mekugi-ana are present on the tang, about a half-inch apart, with a 3-symbol signature on the left side. A consignor-supplied translation attributes the signature to a "Motonari" active circa 1532-1558 near the Suruga Province. Additionally, the notes state that the sword was captured in the field by Colonel Edward Lahti, wartime commander of the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment and Occupation Governor of Northern Honshu.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Some mild spotting is visible on the very fine blade with strong hamon and a few areas of opening grain. The fittings and saya are both very good with the orange and brown tassel badly frayed and the solid orange tassel in good shape.
