Description:

This Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action rifle was manufactured in 1892. The accompanying factory letter confirms the configuration and that it was received in the warehouse on January 24, 1894 and shipped out on December 1, 1894 on order number 3017. Consignor documentation with the rifle states that it was one of seven consecutively numbered Model 1886 rifles purchased by the Kinsley Bank in 1894. The rifles were given to businesses surrounding the bank for use as "guard guns" in the event of a robbery. The rifle history is written on an old tag attached to the lever. The rifle has a 26-inch full octagon barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges and a screw-adjustable center-piece. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate with color casehardened forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with an oil finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The lower receiver tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates. The serial number "83021" is roll-stamped in script numerals behind the rear tang screw.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle is all original and retains nearly 90% of the blue and 40% plus color casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine; wear is limited to a few very minor spots of age discoloration. The barrel markings are crisp and nearly all of the blue finish remains on the bolt while the finish on the loading gate has faded to a blue gray patina. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever retain nearly 90% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The receiver has some scattered spots of age discoloration overall. The case colors on the left side of the receiver have show some light flaking. The casehardened buttplate has several patches of surface rust and retains about 50% of the original finish. The stock and forearm remain in very good condition with a few minor handling and storage marks. This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action rifle with very desirable casehardened receiver and interesting history.
