Winchester 1895-Rifle 30 U.S.
The Winchester Model 1895's box magazine was Browning's last Winchester lever action design and his most modern incorporating a fixed box magazine that allowed for the use of pointed bullets and a tough action capable of handling large calibers. The Model 1895 was an instant hit and earned a favorable review from Theodore Roosevelt who used two during his African safari after having experience using others during the Spanish-American War; his son brought along two more. This Model 1895 was serialized on July 29, 1897, according to the included Cody Firearms Records Office fax which also confirms the caliber, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman brass bead front sight and receiver mounted peep sight, and that it was received in the warehouse on August 5, 1897 and shipped out four days later as part of order number 11931. The barrel is marked with the two line address at center and the caliber designation near the breech. It also has a filler block in the rear sight dovetail. The serial number is marked on the lower tang, and the patent information is found just behind the trigger. The upper tang displays the model designation. The deluxe stock has multi-point checkering on the grip, a hard rubber Winchester grip cap, and a crescent buttplate while the forearm is cut with coordinating checkering and fitted with an ebony insert in the Schnabel tip.

New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Pistol 31 Volcanic
Deluxe Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., circa 1858. This diminutive lever action pistol has a 3 1/2 inch octagon barrel with integral six shot magazine with high polish blue finish and silver-plated brass frame. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened and the two-piece walnut grips have a varnished, piano finish. The barrel has a pinch-top front sight. A fixed rear sight mounted in a dovetail on the frame. The legend "NEW HAVEN CONN. /PATENT FEB. 14. 1854" is roll-stamped in two-lines on the top barrel flat. The serial number, "440" is stamped on the left side of the butt beneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The omission of the "VOLCANIC" markings on the barrel indicates that this pistol was manufactured after Oliver Winchester assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co., in April 1857. The New Haven Arms Co. manufactured approximately 850 No. 1 Pocket Pistols between 1857 and 1862. Volcanic pistols and carbines are rare and historically significant firearms. Volcanic firearms combined a self-contained cartridge, integral, spring-loaded magazine and self-cocking lever action in one revolutionary firearm. With improved cartridges the Volcanic action served as the basis for the successful Henry rifle and Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles. Oliver Winchester's purchase of stock in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., introduced him to firearms manufacturing.

OCTOBER 16. 1860." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber "44 W.C.F" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel behind the rear sight. "44 Cal." is roll-stamped in script letters on the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. "-MODEL 1873-" is roll-stamped on the upper tang in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number "569721B" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the upper tang screw. This musket appears to be one of approximately 700 Model 1873 Muskets shipped to Nicaragua in September 1903. Some of these muskets were apparently never uncrated and were discovered in the original crates in unissued condition in the 1950s and returned to the United States for resale.

Fine Volcanic Lever Action Navy Pistol
This is a highly desirable example of a Lever Action Navy pistol that was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., circa.1856. The pistol has a blued six-inch octagon barrel with integral magazine, distinctive brass frame, loading lever with finger hole and two-piece varnished walnut grips. The barrel has steel pinch-back front sight blade. The fixed rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the top of the frame. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened and the frame is unfinished brass. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish piano finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB.14. 1854" in three-lines. This legend was the standard marking of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. (1855-57). The original Volcanic design was based on a Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson patent. The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., evolved from Smith & Wesson; shirt-maker Oliver Winchester purchased stock in the Volcanic Co., in 1855. In April 1857, Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., as New Haven Arms. "Volcanic" was omitted from the barrel markings on guns manufactured after 1857. The serial number "698" is stamped on the right side of the finger lever, on the lower left side of the frame beneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The Volcanic pistols and carbines were revolutionary and historically significant firearms. The combination of a self-contained primed cartridge, spring loaded magazine and self-cocking lever action was unique in 1855 and with improved cartridges, served as a basis for the Henry and Winchester lever action rifles and carbines. The Volcanic Arms Co. manufactured an estimated 1,200 Navy Pistols with six-inch barrels between 1855 and 1857.

New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle 44 Henry RF
This Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., in March 1865 and issued to 3rd U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment (3rd VVI). This rifle is one of 627 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in 1865. It is identified by serial number as a 3rd VVI rifle on page 76 of "THE HISTORIC HENRY RIFLE" by Wiley Sword. The 3rd VVI rifles were part of a group of Henry, Sharps and Spencer rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department to arm four VVI regiments of the Veteran Volunteer Corps raised in early 1865. These regiments were composed of veteran soldiers armed with the most advanced firearms who would serve as an elite infantry unit. As an incentive for enlistment, the VVI soldiers were authorized to retain their rifles when they mustered out of Federal service. The VVI regiments were organized too late to see any significant action in the Civil War. The 3rd VVI mustered out of service at Camp Butler, Illinois, in July 1866. Unlike the 900 Henry rifles purchased in 1863 to arm the 1st D.C. Cavalry regiment which had Ordnance inspection marks stamped on the receiver and stock, most of the Henry rifles purchased for the 3rd VVI in 1865 lacked any inspection marks. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel was blued and the hammer, trigger and lever were casehardened. The stock is straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the second style receiver with no rear sight dovetail, late buttplate with sharply pointed heel, large diameter brass magazine follower and beveled follower cut in the receiver. The rifle has a nickel-silver, half-moon shaped, front sight and folding leaf rear sight with rounded top, 900 yard center notch and elevator bar with rounded ends. The left side of the stock and barrel are fitted with the standard sling swivel and screw fastened loop for a sling hook. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the large legend: "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN CT." in serif (Roman) letters. This legend was introduced around serial number 4000. The serial number "8650" is stamped: (1) on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate at the toe. There is a large punch-mark on the barrel behind the serial number. The late style cap head buttplate and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. All of the visible serial numbers match. The "H" factory inspection mark of B. Tyler Henry is stamped on the lower tang between the lever latch and tang screw. "R.F.ENEWOLD" is stamped in tiny block letters above the serial number on the receiver tang and in the stock inlet. Enewold was a retailer/collector from Reno, Nevada, and stamped many of the guns he sold, as discussed in the Colt Peacemaker Encyclopedia. The significance of this marking is unknown but it appears to be a period mark.
