Description:

The Winchester Model 1895's box magazine was Browning's last Winchester lever action design and his most modern incorporating a fixed box magazine that allowed for the use of pointed bullets and a tough action capable of handling large calibers. The Model 1895 was an instant hit and earned a favorable review from Theodore Roosevelt who used two during his African safari after having experience using others during the Spanish-American War; his son brought along two more. This Model 1895 was serialized on July 29, 1897, according to the included Cody Firearms Records Office fax which also confirms the caliber, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman brass bead front sight and receiver mounted peep sight, and that it was received in the warehouse on August 5, 1897 and shipped out four days later as part of order number 11931. The barrel is marked with the two line address at center and the caliber designation near the breech. It also has a filler block in the rear sight dovetail. The serial number is marked on the lower tang, and the patent information is found just behind the trigger. The upper tang displays the model designation. The deluxe stock has multi-point checkering on the grip, a hard rubber Winchester grip cap, and a crescent buttplate while the forearm is cut with coordinating checkering and fitted with an ebony insert in the Schnabel tip.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 50% plus of the original blue finish with a brown patina on the balance. There are some minor scratches and marks scattered throughout, some small spots of oxidation on the buttplate, and some small nicks on the barrel near the muzzle. The wood is also fine with some minor dings and slight scrapes. The checkering and markings remain crisp, and the action is excellent.
