Description:

Winchester Model 1886 Takedown rifle manufactured in 1908 with 33 WCF and .45-70 barrels. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum factory letter that describes it as: "Rifle, 33 caliber, Round barrel, Plain trigger, Plain pistol grip, Full magazine, Takedown" and "Rifle butt". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on September 5, 1908, and returned and repaired on October 8, 1914. The rifle has a blued barrel, forearm cap and receiver. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. Both forearms and the pistol grip stock are straight grain American walnut with a high polish finish and "Style I" checkered panels. The stock has a black, checkered, hard rubber, shotgun style buttplate with the Winchester logo in the center and a black, hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The rifle is fitted with factory double set triggers which were probably installed when it was returned to Winchester in 1914. Both barrels are fitted with Lyman "Hunting Style" front sights with white beads and Charles Daniels sporting style rear sights with special half-circle apertures. The rear sight on the .33 W.C.F. barrel has a white insert. The 33 W.C.F. barrel is roll-stamped with the Winchester legend on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight and "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" followed by "33 W.C.F." on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The .45-70 barrel is roll-stamped with the Winchester legend on the left side of the barrel ahead of the rear sight and the Nickel Steel marking and caliber designation below the rear sight. The top of the barrels and the receiver are stamped with the oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three-lines. The serial number "145019" is stamped on the lower tang behind the tang screw.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as factory refurbished. The receiver and .45-70 barrel retain at least 95% of the original blue finish. Wear is limited to takedown marks on the upper portion of the magazine and the barrel band. The hammer and lever have at least 90% of the casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are in very good condition with sharp checkering and minimal handling wear. The left side of the stock is lightly inscribed with a plugged circle of filler wood about 1 1/2-inch in diameter. The .33 W.C.F. barrel shows more wear than the .45-70 barrel and retains 85% of the blue finish with thinning on the forearm cap and takedown collar and takedown marks on the forward portion of the magazine. The forearm has moderate handling wear with some finish loss and is in very good condition. This is a unique example of a special order Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle with extra barrel.
